Every year, the best bodybuilders in the world prepare with one central goal: to win the famous Mr. Olympia. Of course, there are other tentpole events like the annual (and now lucrative) Arnold Classic. However, perhaps nothing holds more prestige for the world’s ripped fitness elite than competing in an iconic Olympia show. This is the biggest stage in bodybuilding for a good reason. With the 2023 professional competition season well and truly underway, athletes can now prepare and train for potentially the most important moment of their careers with a specific date and location in their sights. – see.
That was revealed by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Pro League The 2023 Olympia will officially take place in Nov. 3-5, 2023, in Orlando, FL. The schedule table was highlighted in the recent release of the 2023 competition calendar in IFBB website. It is unclear when the full schedule will be revealed. As is the recent pattern, 11 main bodybuilding divisions will be on display during the competition. The category Mr. Olympia headlined the event, and Iranian athlete Hadi Choopan was the reigning champion after winning his first career Mr. Olympia in 2022.
With the formal return of the Olympia contest to Orlando, the competition has been in Central Florida for three of the last four years. The 2022 edition in Las Vegas, NV, serves as the lone exception in that span. For decades, the contest has almost always been in “Sin City,” but the extreme, unprecedented conditions of the early outbreaks of the COVID-19 pandemic led the IFBB to move the Olympia to Orlando last 2020 in accordance with safety regulations. Before he fell to a three-peat with a disappointing fifth-place result in 2022, Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay captured the first of his two career Olympia titles in the first competition in Florida . Elssbiay successfully defended his title at the 2021 Olympia contest based in Orlando.
In the interest of looking ahead and preparing athletes for the new reality, the IFBB announced changes to its qualification system for the 2023 Olympia in early January 2023. A system of points that open the door for athletes who did not win a competition in that calendar year no longer live. Any competitor who wants to earn a spot on the Orlando, FL, stage this early November must have won a 2023 IFBB Pro League competition, won any previous Olympia, or finished in the top five in their category during the 2022 Olympia competition.
Notable athletes where some of these distinctions apply to the Men’s Open division include Choopan, Elssbiay, 2019 Mr. Olympia Brandon Curry, third place 2022 Olympia competitor Nick Walker, and 2022 Mr. Olympia runner-up Derek Lunsford.
The 2022 Olympia served up its fair share of unexpected surprises and success stories. Knowing how meticulous and dedicated all the top athletes are to their craft, the 2023 edition should be no different.
