5 Simple Tips to Avoid Weekend Weight Gain

Research shows that most people maintain a constant weight throughout the week and gain weight on the weekends.

They do this by eating 100-to-400 more calories every day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (compared to weekdays) and burn a few hundred fewer calories on Sunday (the lowest day of the week).

Here are some ways to avoid this pattern:

  1. Do fun activities (emphasis on activeThings) that you don’t have time for during the week, like biking, hiking, yoga, museum browsing, gardening, dancing, etc. And for bonus points, invite some friends over (instead of meeting them for brunch)!
  2. Don’t drink too much alcohol. And if you do drink, try eating first and choose low-calorie drinks like wine, light beer, and hard liquor with calorie-free mixers.
  3. Take time to relax. Acute stress usually reduces appetite, but chronic stress does the opposite, that’s why study link the latter to weight gain and obesity. So instead of filling your weekends with a lot of work and other obligations, block some free time to read BOOKwatch a TV show, play golf or pickleball, anything to recharge your batteries.
  4. Skip breakfast. . . or eat it. Research shows that some people feel less hungry throughout the day and tend to eat fewer total calories if they skip breakfast while OTHERS generally feel fuller and eat less when they eat breakfast. Find out which method works best for you.
  5. Eat in moderation when eating out. To make it easier, before you go to a restaurant, you can a) eat a small (high-protein works best) snack, b) review the menu online and decide what to eat, c) personalize your food if the stock doesn’t work the options, d) skip the bread basket, e) share your food with others, especially the dessert, and f) reduce or give up alcohol.
