9-Year-Old Rory van Ulft Logs a Shocking 66-Kilogram (145.5-Pound) Clean & Jerk

In some ways, Canadian athlete Rory van Ulft may be one of the strongest competitors for his age that weightlifting and powerlifting have seen in some time. At just 9 years old, van Ulft developed a reputation, especially in his deadlift, for having impeccable pulling power and an “iron will” with a barbell in his hands (literally and figuratively). The athlete’s latest official addition to his weightlifting rap sheet, featuring an incredible overhead lift, will be another entry in the growing lore of his budding career.

On January 21, 2023, van Ulft got a 66-kilogram (145.5-pound) clean and jerk during the 2023 Variety Village Open in Toronto, Canada. According to the caption of a video of the achievement from van Ulft’s Instagram, sponsored by a parent/manager, van Ulft weighed 32.8 kilograms (72.4 pounds) on the day of the competition. In turn, that makes van Ulft the youngest person, regardless of gender, to successfully complete a clean and jerk feat. double their body weight during a sanctioned competition. Undefeated, a final total of 254.39 Sinclair — the main tool of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) for the contextualization of an athlete’s strength by weight class — official van Ulft took the best performance of a 40-kilogram female competitor.

A mind-boggling feat for someone at his young age. Besides, van Ulft’s clean & jerk wasn’t his only big achievement from the Toronto competition. In the same Instagram caption, the athlete broke six Canadian provincial 15U and 17U records in previous lifts during the competition. The final double-body weight clean & jerk appeared like the gravy layered on an already busy day for the young elite competitor.

Van Ulft’s parent/manager on Instagram credited several people for training van Ulft to enjoy such a productive day while simultaneously making history. They include the athlete’s coach, Spencer Moorman, who can be seen in the background of van Ulft’s milestone clip encouraging the lifter. Others who have received praise include trainers like “Cierra” (last name withheld) and the CANAM Strength and Conditioning team from van Ulft’s native Ottawa, Canada. The Ontario Weightlifting Association (ONWA) also gets a shoutout.

“A big thank you to Coach [Moorman](who deserves to win Coach of the Year in at least one country for this!).[Cierra]and the whole[CANAM Strength and Conditioning] team for their outstanding support in this event, as well as [Ontario Weightlifting Association] to make such a fun and welcoming event! “

For the context of the American scale regarding van Ulft’s recent achievements and results, the athlete’s 66-kilogram (145.5-pound) clean & jerk is eight kilograms (17.6 pounds) more than USA Weighlifting (USAW) Youth Women’s Record for the 40-kilogram weight class. Kendra Hoover holds the mark with a clean & jerk of 58 kilograms (127.8 pounds). However, Hoover pointed to his rebellion when he was 12 years old, almost three years older than van Ulft.
