As summarized in our latest rumor report, a report came out from Choose a fight Yesterday (January 23rd) WWE offered Stone Cold Steve Austin a “HUGE” payday to wrestle Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.
But in episode of Observer Wrestling Radio which was released earlier this morning, Dave Meltzer replies that Sean Ross Sab is the scoop with this:
“The match that took place wasn’t Roman Reigns. It was Brock Lesnar.”
The appeal of the Austin/Lesnar match is pretty obvious. In addition to the two being two of the biggest stars to have wrestled for WWE, there is a “what if” (or could it be a “what if”?…sorry, not sorry) stemming from Stone Cold’s 2002 exit due to being told he was booked to lose to Lesnar on TV screen with a little bit of construction.
It looks like the showdown will remain virtual, though. Meltzer deduces that as many of us have – from when Brock returned on Raw XXX. From there, Dave pieced together what he’d heard with other things we’ve been watching on WWE TV to get down to possible Reigns obsession opponent or opponents:
But as you can tell a lot from the show tonight [Raw XXX]it’s not happening… it’s not on, something could happen right now.
“It’s probably been talked about for months. Because I know when the Brock Lesnar/Gunter thing came up, I was immediately told that it wasn’t happening – or that that wasn’t the idea now. It probably would happen now. But the idea was a secret. So this Austin was the secret.
The match hasn’t started, and it looks like it will be Lesnar vs. Lashley based on the tonight show. That hasn’t been confirmed [as a] WrestleMania match. It is clear that they will most likely be in a rumble, and possibly animosity. Whether that means Montreal and PPV there [Feb. 18’s Elimination Chamber] Or WrestleMania, I don’t know. But it looks like it could have something to do with WrestleMania.
“As far as Roman reigns, I don’t know. But I think whatever Roman Reigns is like, we’ll know on Saturday night based on who wins the Rumble. You look at it and go, ‘Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes’ as the favorites for that. I really don’t see anyone Else is in this situation right now.You know, if it’s Dwayne [“The Rock” Johnson] He wants to, but that also seems to be over.
“But definitely a big, big money show for Austin, and… that’s the way it is.”
Everyone at least agrees on the overall size of the WWE show for the Texas Rattlesnake.
Are these two different ideas that made their way through the WWE bureaucracy on the road to WrestleMania 39? Or will one or both of our top scoops get the job done? Does it matter if we end up with Reigns vs. Rhodes and/or Zayn on April 1-2 at SoFi Arena?
