At the beginning of this century, Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler were the two most famous names in bodybuilding. Heading into his legendary eight-game winning streak, Mr. Olympia (1998-2005), Coleman relegated Cutler to second place four times (2001, 2003-2005). When push came to shove, and Cutler was ready for his long-awaited moment of glory, he finally dethroned Coleman in 2006 and earned another title for his ripped peer in 2007.
More than a decade and a half later, Coleman and Cutler are the two main fixtures in the long lore of bodybuilding history. The two former titans have a combined 12 Mr. Olympia (eight for Coleman, four for Cutler) and continue to be influential voices deeply concerned with the events of modern sports. On January 10, 2023, a video posted on Cutler’s YouTube channel showed the two icons, joined by bodybuilding YouTube personality Jesse James West, plow through a collaborative training session. According to Cutler’s video caption, the workout took place during the 2022 Mr. Olympia weekend on December 16-18, 2022.
The central focus of the three men’s joint workout was to chisel their respective back and bicep muscles. To commemorate the two legends he trained, West had headbands and sleeveless flannels to dress it all up. A torn towel (reminiscent of these headbands) was a Cutler trademark during the early parts of his career. Meanwhile, Coleman made wearing flannel sleeveless his own staple during his dominant run as Mr. Olympia.
Once the workout got up and rolling, there was no stopping this whirlwind of energy and strength. The trio worked through individual sets of lat pulldowns, moved on to seated cable rows and single-arm machine rows, and executed alternating traditional dumbbell curls throughout their routine. They do not specify the exact numbers and reps for each individual set.
In a treat for any spectating and diehard fans, Coleman and Cutler used the workout as an opportunity to exchange unique anecdotes from Olympia legend to Olympia legend. Perhaps this is an inside look at what the two men’s shoes looked like when they were in their athletic prime.
Coleman and Cutler are certainly knowledgeable enough to know that what they are offering today is more in line with their wealth of wisdom and experience. That’s what makes them excited to see Hadi Choopan finally climb Mount Olympia after the workout.
At one time, they were rivals. For now, Coleman and Cutler can happily accept their roles as stewards of bodybuilding’s past and future.
