Justin Medeiros Walks Around His Home Gym Before CrossFit Season

In the history of the CrossFit Games, Justin Medeiros has entered the rarest air. As the two-time reigning Fittest Man on Earth®, the 23-year-old joins the legendary Rich Froning Jr. (2011-2014) and Mat Fraser (2016-2020) as the third Men’s CrossFit athlete to win the title. at least twice. Now, as the start of the 2023 CrossFit Open approaches on February 16, 2023 — as Medeiros prepares for his next hopeful title defense — he’s given a new, up-close look at his training process. .

On February 4, 2023, Medeiros posted a video on his YouTube channel where he gives a full tour of his custom home gym. The facility appears to be properly outfitted with the necessary equipment Medeiros needs to excel as an elite CrossFitter at the top of his game.

After a short, spirited back-and-forth, with CrossFit athlete girlfriend Ellie Turner, over what turned out to be a pull-up bar in Medeiros’ home gym, the athlete jumped right into the ring.

Steel Rig

The steel rig in Medeiros’s gym is probably impossible to miss. After all, the multi-faceted implementation constitutes an entire fortress. According to Medeiros, the athlete seems to be using it as a storage device, like his resistance bands. Mostly, though, it allows Medeiros to factor in different types of bars for different movements, such as pull-ups and muscle-ups.

“We have all the pull-up bars set up at the same height as they have at the CrossFit Games …,” Medeiros said. “We have boards just to do, like, different types of grips, do hang-ups, pull-ups…”

Squat Rack, Storage

Just below Medeiros’ steel rig is a squat rack with a full set of bumper plates and dumbbells next to each other, including a variety of dumbbells from five pounds to 125 pound. If that’s not enough, there’s a shelf of kettlebells, up to 70 pounds, and even more bumper plates right next to this extra storage.

Steel Arch

According to Medeiros, where he has his steel arch is “the coolest part of the gym.” The arch connects the two ends of his steel rig and he hangs equipment such as the Olympic ring and ropes above it.

“I’ve never been on a rig this strong,” Medeiros explained. “It’s crazy. It is not attached to any walls and it cannot shake.”

Belt Squat

According to Medeiros, he has a belt squat machine in his gym – which is done under a pull-up bar – which helps maintain the body and prevent injury. The athlete maintains that he can use it for pull-up and squat movements alternately.

Barbells

In another corner of his gym, Medeiros set aside space for various barbells such as the EZ-curl bar, Axle Bar, and cambered bar. There are also some heavier dumbbells, a Log Lift tool, and a multipurpose lat pulldown machine.

Cardio

In a basic section of Medeiros’ gym, he has all his cardio work in one place. Most everything from row machines and Assault bikes are represented in this star CrossFitter’s cardio space.

Steel Rig, Continued

On the other side of Medeiros’ steel rig is a reverse hyper attachment, a pad that helps stretch the back and hamstrings, build strength and ease pain. It comes with several bumper plates, some medicine balls and sandbags (including a 150-pound medicine ball and 300-pound sandbag), as well as a variety of jump ropes. If that wasn’t enough, there is another squat rack in this part of the Medeiros gym.

Peg Board

At the end of the main part of Medeiros’ gym sits a peg board, framed in a plexiglass backing to mimic the set-up during many CrossFit competitions. A plyometrics section, along with jerk blocks, also sits next to the end wall.

“My dad came out and set up the plexiglass. We got our pegboard here. We want to make sure we have plexiglass because that’s what we use in the competition… The place where your feet go is different in every gym, I’ve done it with brick, I’ve done it with wood, I’ve done it with plexiglass .. . “said Medeiros. “So we really try to copy everything we do in the competition, the best we can, when we train.”

If Medeiros repeats as the Best Man on Earth®, he still has work to do to catch individual legends like Fraser (five titles) and Froning (four titles). However, with Medeiros’ fast pace, with this type of sport-specific equipment elevating him, it may only be a matter of time before he sits at the top of the Men’s CrossFit side of all time. legends.
