As an athlete, you are always looking for new and innovative ways to improve your performance and take your fitness to the next level. Studies have shown that phosphatidic acid can, in fact, play an important role in the muscle building process, helping you achieve greater muscle and strength gains by activating protein kinase and a specific pathway called mTOR.
What is phosphatidic acid
Phosphatidic acid is a complex phospholipid fatty acid, consisting of two fatty acids, and a phosphate group, covalently attached to a glycerol molecule. Phosphatidic acid is a precursor for the production of other fatty acids, where it serves as a signaling lipid, and is a major component of cell membranes. Recent findings have demonstrated a link between phosphatidic acid and muscle protein synthesis through protein kinase, a critical regulator of muscle protein synthesis, known as the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). Researchers believe that phosphatidic acid plays an important role in mTOR signaling that helps facilitate muscle protein synthesis.
Phosphatidic acid benefits
Because phosphatidic acid plays a role in the mTOR signaling pathway, researchers believe it could have an effect on body composition. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of phosphatidic acid as an anabolic supplement is equivocal, due to the small number of studies. Publish an analysis in a journal Sports Science Six studies were found that fit the search criteria. Of these studies, three indicated no effect on lean body mass, while the remaining three studies showed a potentially positive effect on performance and body composition. [R].
Some research suggests that phosphatidic acid may improve strength and muscle gain. An eight-week study conducted at Hofstra University assigned 15 strength-trained male participants to either a placebo group or a group that consumed 750 mg of phosphatidic acid. All participants experienced significant improvements in every measure of muscle size and strength. Results indicate that phosphatidic acid supplementation combined with resistance training was not different from placebo in combination with resistance training. [R].
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted at Baylor University examined the effects of eight weeks of resistance training in combination with a placebo or phosphatidic acid on 28 male participants. Similar results were seen in all groups with increases in strength and muscle mass [R].
Phosphatidic acid benefits:
Combining resistance training with exogenous phosphatidylserine supplementation is likely to further stimulate the up-regulation of mTOR, and thus further increase muscle protein synthesis. Studies show that phosphatidic acid combined with other nutritional supplements can help performance, but the current research is somewhat equivocal. More research is needed to determine whether phosphatidic acid can provide significant ergogenic benefits and can be used as an effective supplement.
